Cholvast (Atorvastatin) is part of a class of medications known as HMG CoA reductase inhibitors, commonly referred to as "statins." It works by lowering levels of "bad" cholesterol (low-density lipoprotein, or LDL) and triglycerides in the bloodstream while raising "good" cholesterol (high-density lipoprotein, or HDL).
Cholvast is prescribed for the management of high cholesterol and to decrease the risk of stroke, heart attack, or other cardiovascular issues in individuals with type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, or other contributing factors. It is suitable for adults and children aged 10 and older.
Cholvast can be taken with or without food but should be ingested with some liquid. Follow your doctor's instructions regarding dosage and duration of treatment, which will depend on the patient's condition and their response to the medication. To maximize the benefits, it’s advisable to take the tablet around the same time every day. You may start noticing the positive effects of the treatment within a few weeks, but do not stop taking the medication without consulting your doctor, as high cholesterol often does not present visible symptoms. Those taking Cholvast may experience side effects such as muscle soreness, confusion, diarrhea, joint discomfort, nausea, headaches, and constipation.
It is advised to avoid grapefruit or grapefruit juice while on this medication due to the risk of a potentially harmful drug interaction.
If you experience an allergic reaction, seek immediate assistance at the nearest emergency department. Common symptoms of an allergic reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, tightness in the chest, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
